Bagh artist Abdul Khatri bags UNESCO 2018 award in Qatar
BHOPAL: Bagh artisan Abdul Kadar Khatri has been felicitated by the prestigious UNESCO and World Craft Council award for excellence in handicrafts 2018 in Qatar. He was awarded for his craftsmanship of Bagh prints on silk dupattas decorated with traditional colours.
Each craft was selected by ensuring highest levels of excellence by international experts who gathered from all over the world.Khatri infused new introductions to the traditional Bagh print, making his collection stand out from the rest.
Individual designs were imprinted with separate blocks to prepare a unique scarf. To make the scarf even more eye-catching, it was prepared while incorporating modernity in traditional designs, including lehriya and coconut net. Natural colours were later added with extreme care with black colour made of iron and red colour made of alum and other colours were derived from different roots of plants.
Khatri tries new experiments on a regular basis in his dyeing printing workshop in Dhar district. He has also exhibited his exceptional talent in Bagh print at international platform in countries such as Germany, Oman, Australia, South Africa, Malaysia and Thailand.
Khatri is also preparing a future action plan with the objective of making bagh traditional handicraft of India more popular worldwide.
