Zurich, Switzerland now bestows upon same-sex couples the privileges previously enjoyed by heterosexual couples only.

In a vote held last 22 September, residents of Zurich voted to pass a referendum that extends to same-sex partners the same tax, inheritance and social security benefits given to heterosexual couples. The 63-37 percent margin vote made Zurich the first legislative district or canton in Switzerland to officially and legally recognise same-sex unions.
