MAINTENANCE
At the moment, Vietnam Railways has 15 railway
infrastructure management companies taking charge of track
maintenance for the total length of 2,600 km in which the
meter gauge, standard gauge and mixed gauge are 2,169 km,
178 km and 253 km, respectively. The main functions of 15
railway infrastructure management companies are maintaining
of railway infrastructure such as bridges, tracks, tunnels;
replacing of turnouts, rails, sleepers; supplementing additional
ballast to ensure the smooth status of track, track direction
and track geometry. On the whole line, there are 1,790 railway
bridges, 24 combined bridges, 39 tunnels and 278 stations.
In order to ensure the effective maintenance works, these
companies are located based on geographical features of the
railway network.
With the efficient investment in purchasing
machinery and equipment for track maintenance and repair,
the quality of the railway lines and the working condition
of railway workers is much improved. The hard works which
used to be done manually are being done by modern machinery
and equipment such as Plasser & Theuer tamping machines,
Matisa recording cars and rail-defect detectors.
In the future, along with the industrialization
and modernization process of the railway sector, Vietnam Railways
will make full use of its source to purchase more modern machinery,
rails and turnouts from Austria, France, etc for the best
operation of trains running on our railway network.

construction material manufacturing joint-stock companies
which specialize in
: - Building of civil structures such as bridges, tracks,
tunnels, stations, embankment and ports.
- Building of industrial, irrigational and agricultural works.
- Levelling of land for construction works. - Producing of
construction materials and steel structure.
- Supplying and manufacturing of pre-stressed concrete sleepers.

with specialized machinery and equipment for construction

for the road and railway sector in recent years, such as:

SIGNALLING & TELECOMMUNICATIONS
Signalling
Signalling equipments play a very significant
part in ensuring the safety of train operation. To be being
fully aware of its importance, the leaders of Vietnam Railways
have paid a special attention to the improvement and modernization
of signalling system by mobilizing funds from domestic and
foreign sources. With this investment, the quality of our
signalling system has been step by step improved.
Vietnam Railways has carried out some important
projects such as modernization of signalling systems on the
whole network including Northern lines, Hanoi Junction, Hanoi
- Vinh, Vinh - Nha Trang and Vinh - Sai Gon sections. In these
projects, modern technology of France, Germany, Switzerland
and China countries have been introduced. We have equipped
interlocking system in most of stations on the whole railway
network and semaphore signal is gradually replaced with colour
light signal. In addition, semi-automatic together with automatic
block systems are widely used in place of previous token method
and automatic warning systems have been installed at 230 level
crossings.
Furthermore, Vietnam Railways also attaches
great importance to study and test modern technology in the
field of train operation such as automatic train control system,
automatic train protection system, train location detection
system, etc with a view to better ensuring train operation
safety, increasing speed and running capacity of the railway
network.
With highly skilled and experienced staff,
Vietnam Railways has capacity of designing, manufacturing
and installing of the total signalling systems including interlocking
and warning systems at level crossings by using relay with
computer-based control.
Telecommunications
The telecommunications system of Vietnam
Railways originally based on Chinese technology and has been
upgraded with new advanced technology together with the renovation
process of the railway sector. Telecommunication equipments
imported from China, France and other European countries are
replacing the old ones.
Based on the geographical features of the
railway network, the telecommunications system of Vietnam
Railways is divided into 05 regional networks including telecommunication
for longdistance transmission, administrative works at stations,
infrastructure maintenance and local communication.
With our efficient investment, there has
been much improvement in the telecommunication system such
as transmission and switching systems. Optic fibre cable network
for transmission were completely deployed for the sections
of Ha Noi - Vinh, Nha Trang - Sai Gon and will be soon installed
for Vinh - Sai Gon section. Switching system with digital
exchanges exchanges is connected via transmission system and
public telephone network. Along with the modernization of
telecommunication system, manual exchanges are gradually replaced
with the digital ones. Besides, Vietnam Railways employs specialized
telecommunication system for dispatching and infrastructure
maintenance. Especially, video conference of Polycom (USA)
is effectively used for transport management. In case of emergency
demand, radio telecommunication system is utilized.
Vietnam Railways currently has 05 railway
telecommunication & signalling companies which are located
in suitable positions of the railway network to ensure our
stable telecommunication service. Furthermore, we also have
plan of providing common telecommunication service and taking
part in public telecommunication market
