iida and the avant-garde artist Yayoi Kusama have teamed up to transform the mobile phone into a “work of art” that captures both the imagination of art and the wonder of life.
In collaboration with a globally acclaimed artist, iida attempts to transform the mobile phone into a “work of art” that can be“worn” all the time. By elevating the ordinary mobile phone to the realm of an “artwork,” iida is creating a place where the splendor of art and life’s sense of wonder can be shared with many more people. The first project was carried out with Yayoi Kusama, an avant-garde artist who represents Japan. Kusama has long created unique artworks with polka dot motifs and intense colors that dazzle her patrons. She has an established audience all over the world for her numerous artworks that defy particular genres, such as sculptures, paintings, and even novels. Her work is internationally acclaimed today: for example, a net painting—“No.2” (1959)—from her early work broke the 5 million-dollar mark at an art auction in the U.S. After many obstacles were overcome during the creative process and an unimaginable amount of time and effort were spent (for an ordinary mobile phone), Kusama’s three artworks—based on originals with a mobile phone theme—were finally commercialized. By using intricate handwork and high-level print techniques rarely used before, Kusama realized a mobile phone that possesses the quality and presence of an “artwork.”
