Copenhagen: Discover the alternative side!

April 7, 2016

Which Scandinavian capital city grew out of a tiny 10th century fishing village, and now routinely ranks among the best for quality of life in international surveys? Offering one of the highest number of restaurants and bars per capita in the world, it could only be Copenhagen: the cultural hub of Scandinavia. You’ll be spoilt for choice by attractions, be it castles, museums, or art galleries, but there’s another side to Copenhagen; it’s unusual, alternative, and distinctly Danish!

Bypass the little mermaid and Strøget shopping strip, and seek out the Assistens Cemetery. Not simply a burial place for great Danes, including Hans Christian Andersen and Søren Kierkegaard, it’s also the biggest and most beautiful park in the lively Nørrebro district. Bedecked with temples and tombs shaded by weeping willows, the cemetery provides the perfect setting for a romantic picnic for two, or relaxing with a good book.

In the heart of the city, pop into Floss to soak up the authentic atmosphere of Copenhagen’s premier hangout for musicians, artists and writers. A smoky haven that’s more shabby than chic, go there for brilliant company and great value beer!

The alternative side of Copenhagen is crystallised in the form of Christiania, a self -proclaimed autonomous neighbourhood. Go for a guided tour, and revel in the tranquillity of this laidback and freethinking former military base. Yoga, meditation, organic cafes – relaxing is the order of the day! Be sure to check out Nemoland when you’re there too. Words don’t do this place justice; it’s weird and wonderful and you really need to experience it for yourself!

Dedicated film buffs should make a beeline to Vester Vov Vov, a gem of a cinema specialising in arthouse films and documentaries. Independent cinemas like this one are a dying breed, so come along and show your support! Catch a feature you won’t be able to see anywhere else, and afterwards sink into the antique French furniture with a glass of wine. Unlimited coffee also available!

For something completely different, make your way to Warehouse 9. This niche performance space and art gallery in Copenhagen’s meatpacking district is as far away from the mainstream as you can get. Celebrating all things alternative, this is the venue to broaden your artistic and cultural horizons. Expect the unexpected, and you’ll still be pleasantly surprised!

Next to the Hotel Tivoli, you’ll find the famous Tivoli Gardens, a 19th century amusement park and pleasure garden. Brace yourself for a ride on The Star Flyer, the world's second tallest carousel, then retire to the Hotel Brasserie for a range of delicious Danish and international dishes. Velbekomme!
