After spending 14 years in the shipyard for repairs and modernization, Russian Navy’s Project 877 B-187 diesel-electric submarine Komsomolsk-on-Amur rejoined the Russian Pacific Fleet on January 27.

The upgraded Kilo-class submarine returned from its builder’s sea trials in December 2016, and has now been handed over to the Russian Navy, Amur Shipbuilding Plant announced.

Komsomolsk-on-Amur was built at ASP in 1991 and was docked for repairs in 2003. Insufficient funding delayed the work for 12 years, the company said.

The submarine was named as Komsomolsk-on-Amur on July 15, 2015.

Armed with six torpedo tubes, the 3,000-ton submarine is designed for anti-ship and submarine warfare in shallow waters. The 72-meter submarine is crewed by 57 sailors and is capable of reaching speeds of 17 knots.
