On June 5, House Speaker Robert DeLeo, Senate President Stan Rosenberg, and Jay Ash, secretary of Housing and Economic Development, joined hundreds of nonprofit and business leaders at the Statehouse to celebrate Nonprofit Awareness Day, a statewide holiday signed into law by Gov. Deval Patrick 10 years ago.

This celebration was hosted by the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network and presented by Citizens Bank.

“The impact of the Massachusetts nonprofit sector is incredible,” said Jim Klocke, CEO of MNN. “The state’s 33,000+ nonprofits employ a sixth of the Massachusetts workforce. Every day, they provide essential services to individuals and communities throughout the commonwealth. We are grateful for Citizens Bank’s generous support of our annual Nonprofit Awareness Day celebration, which enables us to recognize and applaud the invaluable role that our sector plays in Massachusetts.”

“At Citizens Bank, we invest in organizations that help build stronger communities where we live and work,” said Jerry Sargent, president of Citizens Bank, Massachusetts. “We are proud to sponsor Nonprofit Awareness Day and celebrate the terrific work that nonprofits do in every region of the state. They truly are the cornerstones of our communities.”

During Nonprofit Awareness Day, Nonprofit Excellence Awards were presented to four organizations and two professionals exemplifying the innovative and effective work of nonprofits across Massachusetts. The winners were nominated by peers and community members then selected by an independent panel of nonprofit and business leaders. This year, MNN received over 125 Nonprofit Excellence Award nominations.
