Hydatid disease is endemic in sheep and cattle-raising areas worldwide. Its prevalence is high in Nepal. The study was carried out to determine the clinical, radiological and pathological presentations of hydatid disease. This was a retrospective study of all hydatid disease cases reported in Department of Pathology, from August 1996 to July 2010. All the clinical, radiological and pathological data were collected and collated. A total of 51 cases of hydatidosis were studied. Patients presented with related symptoms in 47 cases, 92.16% with CI (84.78, 99.54) and asymptomatic in four cases, 7.84% with CI (0.46, 15.22). Involvement of liver and lung was found in 35 (68.63%) cases and 10 (19.61%) cases respectively. Involvement of other organs like kidney, pelvis and broad ligament were seen in 6 of the cases. Total 29 cases, 56.86% with CI (43.2, 70.46) had solitary cyst while rest of the cases had multiloculated cyst. All cases had radiological correlation and histopathological confir...

Study on Prevalence and Cyst Characterization of Hydatidosis in Cattle Slaughtered at Wolayta Soddo Municipal Abbattior2017 •
A cross-sectional survey of bovine hydatidosis was conducted on local zebu cattle slaughtered at Wolayta Soddo Municipal Abattoir from November, 2012 to March, 2013 to determine the prevalence and cyst characterization caused by hydatid disease. No statistical significant variation was observed with regards to place of origin and age of the animals (P > 0.05). After postmortem examination, hydatid cysts were collected and cyst characterization was conducted. Out of a total of 446 animals examined, 50(11.21%) harboring one or more hydatid cyst. The result obtained from Postmortem examination indicated that the lung was the most commonly affected organ followed by liver. The involvement of lung, Liver, kidney, spleen and heart was found to be 50%, 26.92%, 5.77%, 9.62% and 7.69% respectively. From the total of 52 cysts counted, 14(26.69%), 18(34.62%), 20(38.46%) were large, medium and small respectively and 5(9.62%), 35(67.31%) and 12(23.08%) were fertile, sterile and calcified resp...

A Comprehensive Prospective Clinical Study of Hydatid Disease2014 •
The actual prevalence of hydatid disease in northern part of India is found more than usually interpreted. The present study has been done on 25 patients suffering from hydatid disease of various sites and treated during June 2009 to November 2011 at JLN Medical College and Hospital, Ajmer, with the aim of studying the clinical manifestations of hydatid disease of different sites and/or organ system and of analysing the morbidity and mortality of hydatid disease. The age, sex, h/o dog contact, duration of hospital stay, clinical presentation, treatment advised, findings and difficulties encountered during operation, and postoperative management of patients as well as morbidity and mortality were recorded and analysed. We observed that the mean age was 40 years. The sex incidence revealed female preponderance in the study (M : F: 1 : 2). Duration of illness in the present study varied from 1 month to 6 years in case of liver hydatid disease. Majority of patients were from rural areas...

A Case Report of Hydatid Disease in Deccani Sheep2021 •
Hydatid disease was diagnosed in a Deccani sheep during postmortem examination which revealed hydropericardium, gelatinization of fat, different sized hydatid cysts in lungs and liver. Cysts were filled with clear fluid, ranges from 10ml to 25ml. The size of cyst varied from 2 cm to 3 cm in diameter. Histopathological section of the affected lungs and liver revealed laminated hyaline layer surrounded by thick coat of granulation tissue causing fibrosis and infiltration of leucocytes. The adjoining areas of the cysts showed alveolar emphysema and vascular congestion in lung and progressive focal pressure atrophic lesions with vacuolar degeneration in the effected lungs and liver. In the present case, the animals were let loose for grazing, which had access to stray dogs and results into maintenance of parasites or parasitic larvae or ova in the environment. Based on the history, gross and microscopical examination of the organs, it was diagnosed as hydatid disease.

Background: Hydatid disease is a major public health problem that is spreading all over the world. We aimed to this retrospective study was to investigate clinical and histopathological features of patients with hydatid disease (HD). Methods: Archival records of the 113 patients who diagnosed as hydatid cysts between 1997 and 2015 were analyzed retrospectively. Clinical and histopathological parameters were evaluated in all patients. Results: Of 113 cases, 55.8% were female and 44.2% were male. Mean age was 38.3 years. The average diameter of cysts was 9.50 cm. Cysts were localized in liver (77.0%), soft tissue (5.3%), lungs (3.5%), spleen (2.7%), kidney (1.8%), cerebellum (0.9%), gall bladder (0.9%) and paraspinal site (0.9%). 7.1% of cases had multiple organ involvement. 101 cases had only one cyst and 12 cases had 2 or more cysts in the same organ. The histopathologic findings consistent laminated cyst wall, scolex and pericystic inflammatory infiltrate. All patients were treated...
Aim: To investigate the burden of hydatid disease (HD) on Jordanian population during the past 10 years and highlight the most commonly used imaging modalities for its diagnosis. Materials and methods: Information of 217 HD patients including age, gender, address, organ involved, number and size of hydatid cysts, radiological and histopathological results were recorded from registry offices of four main Jordanian hospitals after receiving the required approvals. Results: The highest number of HD cases was recorded from the central provinces of Jordan; however, most cases were reported from Al-Mafraq governorate. Ultrasound (US) was the most widely used diagnostic tool for HD. The liver was the most affected organ with HD and the age of most of the inspected patients was in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th decades. Single cyst per organ was recorded in 138 of the cases and large hydatid cysts (>5 cm) were observed in 48 cases. Conclusions: Besides the awareness and control measures which are implemented by the Ministry of Health in Jordan to eradicate HD, results of the present study indicated that HD is still regarded as an important public health problem in the country. Imaging plays an essential role in the initial diagnosis of HD but not the classification of the disease. However, the definitive diagnosis is achieved after the surgical removal of hydatid cysts and the confirmation of the presence of the hydatid cyst layers is tested by histopathological techniques. Currently, surgery remains the only available treatment approach for HD in Jordan.

In order to have a definite occurrence pattern of hydatidosis among sheeps of Jammu region a retrospective examination of all visceral organs was conducted with a sample size of 1000 sheep at an organized municipal slaughter house of Jammu region. A total of 64 sheep were positive for hydatidosis with overall prevalence of 6.4 per cent. Lungs and liver were found to be most common predilection sites for the hydatidosis with figures 43.75% and 39.06%, respectively. Cysts of different types viz., viable, non-viable, sterile and calcified were having prevalence of 64.70%, 35.29%, 63.33% and 36.66% respectively with overall fertility rate as 53.12%. The size of the cyst being another stricture to categories the cysts which were of small size viz., 24 (22.64%) in lung and 31 (29.24%) in liver while as 39 (36.78%) in lungs and 12 (11.32%) in liver were of medium size.

Gross and histological comparison of hydatid cyst infection in livers of sheep and cows2012 •
Three samples of fertile hydatid cysts and 3 other sterile were collected from sheep liver and 3 samples of sterile hydatid cysts from cows liver. Infected liver samples with hydatid cyst were obtained from meat seal shops in AL-Muthanna province in December 2010, then measured dimensions of cysts and calculated the quantity of hydatid fluid and viability of protoscolices by staining with eosin stain then examining under a light microscope of 40x. petechial hemorrhage and paleness around cysts were important gross lesions in sheep in addition to calcification in cow hydatid cysts, on another hand the histological lesions were thickened fibrous layer and severe necrosis with infiltrations of eosinophils and extensive calcification in cows liver. There was a significant effect of the amount of hydatid cyst, thickness of the fibrous layer and thickness of the necrotic layer.
