A Russian guided bomb attack in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region wounded seven children and an adult on Thursday, Ukrainian officials said.

The Kharkiv region -- large parts of which were occupied by Russia for months after it invaded in February 2022 -- has faced increased attacks for weeks.

The wounded were inside a sports complex that was hit along with houses in the town of Dergachi.

"Seven children were wounded... Six boys and one girl aged nine to 15," Ukraine's state prosecution service wrote on Telegram.

A 76-year-old man was also injured, it said.

Regional governor Oleg Sinegubov earlier said that the strike was carried out with guided aerial bombs and that the wounded were taken to hospital with light to moderate injuries.

Russian forces have been increasingly using these guided bombs to target frontline regions.

The aerial bombs can be dropped from further away, allowing Russian aeroplanes to avoid air defence.

Another guided bomb attack killed two civilians in the Kharkiv region on Wednesday.
