| In late August 2023, country highpointers Eric Gilbertson & Andreas Frydensberg went into the Gissar Range with survey equipment with the goal to determine the true highpoint of Uzbekistan.
They climbed both Khazret Sultan, the widely accepted highpoint before this expedition, and made the first ascent of another peak, Alpomish Peak, about 4 miles (6.4km) due south of Khazret Sultan.
Gilbertson & Frydensberg's findings revealed that Alpomish stands at 4,668 meters (15,315'), around 25 meters higher than Khazret Sultan.
This makes Alpomish the true country highpoint of Uzbekistan. |
