Sun sets on SmartBikeDC
The little red bikes that preceded Capital Bikeshare have two weeks to live.
The smaller, pilot initiative will end January 3, the District Department of Transportation announced today.
"It is because of the success of the SmartBikeDC program we were able to expand and eventually launch Capital Bikeshare," said DDOT Director Gabe Klein in a statement.
The SmartBike program has only 10 locations, many of them located next to Capital Bikeshare stations, prompting confusion among gawkers and long rows of the two types of red bikes on sidewalks. Stations included Dupont Circle and Union Station, and all will be removed by DDOT over five weeks.
Capital Bikeshare stations will be installed in all SmartBike locations that don't already have them.
In a little over two years, riders took more than 50,000 trips by SmartBike, DDOT said. Bikeshare already includes ten times the stations and and yearly memberships, representing more of a regular commuting option.
