Knowledge Hierarchy

In this chapter, I focus on two discrete but interrelated intellectual projects: Southern theory and decolonial options. With a focus on race-aware and anti-racist critiques of Southern theories, I argue that assertions of the need to focus more centrally on Southern theory are not equivalent with assertions of the need to end, unequivocally, the coloniality of knowledge. Some of the critical and celebrated scholarship critiquing the (on-going) hegemony of Eurocentric theory and knowing—broadly, theories from the South—has failed to systematically engage with the racialisation of actors within the university and racial inequality in knowledge making. In such paradigms, southern theories are importantly recognised as valuable for shifting the gaze at the same time that there remains a certain blindness to the colonial racial hierarchies that create and sustain the invisibilization(s) and destructions of them. Situated in the context of coloniality, such projects risk reiterating the global knowledge hierarchy. I sketch an alternative approach for knowing across and between North(s)-South(s) and South(s)-South(s). This approach is a feminist decolonial orientation founded on an open assessment of racial and geographical inequalities within the university along with a critical feminist attention to the politics of the mundane in the academy (authorship, citation, language, promotion and impromptu encounters in classrooms and corridors).

The traditional view of data, information and knowledge as a hierarchy fosters an understanding of information as an independent entity with objective meaning—that while information is tied to data and knowledge, its existence is not dependent upon them. While traditional conceptions assume a static nature of information, expressed by the equation information = data + meaning, we have argued that this understanding is based on an ontologization of an entwined process of sense-making and meaning-making. This process starts from the recognition of a pattern that is interpreted in a way that influences our behavior. At the same time, the process character of meaning-making makes us aware of the fact that this ontologized hierarchy is in fact an interwoven process. We conclude that the phenomenological analysis of this ontologization that makes into being data, information, and knowledge has to go back to this process to reveal the essential underlying dependencies.

Aksiologi merupakan salah satu aspek penting dalam falsafah yang khusus membincangkan teori nilai. Dalam konteks Islam, aksiologi mempunyai keistimewaan yang tersendiri kerana berpandukan wahyu daripada Allah SWT iaitu al-Qur’an. Oleh sebab wujudnya sumber ilmu sedemikian, maka pengkategorian ilmu dalam Islam adalah berdasarkan hierarki tertentu. Persoalannya, apakah aspek-aspek hierarki ilmu dari perspektif al-Qur’an? Apakah nilai penting dalam hierarki ilmu tersebut? Oleh itu, kertas kerja ini mempunyai dua tujuan. Pertama, mengenal pasti aspek-aspek hierarki ilmu dalam al-Qur’an. Kedua, menganalisis nilai yang menjadi intipati kepada aksiologi ilmu Islam. Dengan menggunakan kaedah analisis kandungan, perbincangan kertas kerja ini dibahagikan kepada dua bahagian. Pertama, aspek-aspek hierarki ilmu dalam al-Qur’an. Kedua, nilai hierarki ilmu dalam al-Qur’an. Secara keseluruhannya, kertas kerja ini mendapati lima aspek dalam hierarki ilmu Islam iaitu pertama, kalam Allah SWT; kedua, tradisi Rasulullah SAW; ketiga, penaakulan akal; keempat, pendengaran; dan kelima, pemerhatian. Penilaian berasaskan al-fu’ad (mata hati) akan menatijahkan ilmu yang benar, manakala penilaian berasaskan al-hawa’ (nafsu) membawa kepada ilmu yang batil. Oleh yang demikian, aksiologi ilmu yang terdapat dalam al-Qur’an adalah berasaskan penilaian al-fu’ad.

Le premier fluide que le sein maternel émet pour le nouveau-né, dénommé en khmer teuk doh dambaung, signifie littéralement « lait du début ». Les mères au Cambodge ont longtemps jeté cette substance et attendu le lait dit « plus épais » pour mettre au sein leur nouveau-né. Cette pratique se perd avec le renforcement de la médicalisation des naissances depuis les années 1990. Le savoir biomédical sur le colostrum, axé sur ses bienfaits et la promotion de l’allaitement exclusif dès la naissance, est omniprésent dans les discours des mères. Cependant, dans la pratique, le colostrum est complété par des substituts au lait maternel. De nouvelles pratiques ni conformes aux anciennes ni conformes aux recommandations biomédicales se mettent en place au sein de la maternité, déterminées par une hiérarchisation et une hybridation des savoirs effectuées par les mères au cours de leur expérience de l’allaitement les premiers jours. Cette communication propose une reflexion sur le savoir expérientiel relatif au colostrum, sur ses différentes composantes (jugements sensoriels, techniques du corps, informations diverses transmises par l’entourage socio-familial), et le processus de décision qui conduit les mères à compléter par des substituts au lait maternel. Elle met en évidence le rôle central du contact direct de la mère avec le nouveau-né, l’environnement et l’entourage socio-familial dans la décision de donner ou non le colostrum de façon exclusive. L’étude, basée sur une enquête par questionnaires (auprès de 100 mères et 20 personnels de santé) et une enquête ethnographique à base d’observations et d’entretiens (20 mères, 3 pères, 4 personnels de santé), a été réalisée dans une maternité de Phnom Penh entre septembre et décembre 2014. Concernant les mères, l’enquête était conduite les premiers jours après l’accouchement.
